Making Braided/Twisted Loaf

Ingredients
3 - 3.5 cups Bread Flour
3 Tbsp sugar
2 packets easy blend yeast OR 5 tsp dry yeast
1.5 tsp salt
1 Tbsp marjoram
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup butter
1 egg
1 Tbsp butter
Method
- In a bowl, heat
milk, water, butter, and sugar until very warm. Add in yeast and allow it to
froth for 5 minutes.
- In another bowl,
mix bread flour, salt, and herbs.
- Mix wet ingredients
into dry, make a soft dough.
- Knead dough for 10
minutes until soft.
- Divide dough into 3
equal balls and allow to rest 5 minutes, covered.
- Roll each ball into
a rope measuring 30 inches. Braid the ropes and pinch at ends.
- Tie the braided
rope into a simple knot, tucking ends underneath the loaf.
- Allow this to rise
for 30 minutes in a warm place, covered. Brush loaf with beaten egg.
- Bake at 375 F /gas
mark 5/ 190 C for 35-45 minutes.
- During the last ten
minutes of baking, cover the loaf with aluminium foil to prevent burning of
the top of the loaf.
- Melt butter on top
of loaf. Allow to cool on a wire rack before cutting.
