Mentoring & Tutoring scheme for your kids

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY ISLAMIC SOCIETY BIG SIBS SCHEME

This is what we hope to be one of many more programmes that we undertake as Cambridge University Islamic Society to provide for the Muslim community at large in the Cambridge area.

This scheme has been very successful in the past. The following aims/objectives for local Cambridge Muslims:

1- CONFIDENCE building for our younger brothers and sisters; through an exploration of a variety of activities to find their strengths

2- improving SELF-ESTEEM; by their socialising with and making older friends

3- being a good ROLE-MODEL for the children - religious and academic guidance as much as we can

4- facilitating the process of acquiring academic and Islamic knowledge

5- providing a conducive environment for halaal entertainment and sports

All these done through activities such as:

a) helping with Homework in the younger sibs house (previously this has worked very well with a meal for them to eat together..)

b) football (or other activities/sports)

c) going out to eat together

d) 'lecture shadowing' (where the younger sib attends lectures and classes at Cambridge University)

e) bowling/cinema etc

f) attending mosque together etc...

These are of course merely ideas for aims. objectives and activities, and the details will vary depending on the siblings and what each individual is particularly looking for.

NEW BOOK BY CAMBRIDGE AUTHOR

Ibrahim - Where in the Spectrum Does He Belong?
By Shahidun Rahman

IbrahimThe book is an  autobiographical account of a mother’s struggle to bring up a child with a learning disorder. It tells the story of Ibrahim Rahman and his struggle with Semantic Pragmatic Language Disorder, (a speech and language disorder) part of the autistic spectrum of disorders. It highlights the lack of awareness of this condition within our society, but particularly within the Bangladeshi community where autism is not recognised.

It is currently available as a printed book - ISBN 1-904181-35-X from the following web sites Amazon, Waterstones, Blackwells, Powells, Foyles, and every major internet bookstore. It is also available as a downloadable e-book from http://www.deunantbooks.com/bookslist/Biography/page1.html.

Visit the web site www.spldinfo.com for more information about SPLD and the book.

HALAL FOOD AT ADDENBROOKES HOSPITAL

Raj Foods who supplies HALAL food to Addenbrookes Hospital is AUTHENTIC. The Halal Food Authority checked them out and all their licences and cooking practises are ISLAMICALLY CORRECT.

For all those who require a NON-CURRY Halal meat should make a request at the ward, if possible before they are admitted...otherwise a Kosher menu is available with chicken and fish dishes.

REMEMBER ..if you do not ask they cannot monitor a demand for Halal food to taste.  For European Muslims, a non-curry menu is being looked into, but it is demand driven so please ask.

For all comments to the me as the Foundation Governor should be emailed or presented in writing to the address below if you need me to take any action.

A Mosque area has been designated for all STAFF and PATIENTS for every FRIDAY only.  For a few weeks it is SEMINAR ROOM 8 in the Clinical School.

Otherwise please use the curtained area in the chapel for daily prayers and make sure the Qur'an  with English Translation is always on display above the cabinet holding the prayer mats.
